One step greener with every swipe
Swiping your card is a great start, of course, but there are lots of ways to be greener. Here are some easy steps you can take in your daily life to reduce your carbon footprint.
Energy saving lightbulbs use 80% less energy than standard lightbulbs and each one will save you £7 a year from your energy bill. They also last 10 times longer than normal bulbs. When they’re worn out bring them back to us and we’ll recycle them for you. Easy.
Leaving appliances on standby means they’re still sapping energy. A mobile phone charger left plugged in without the phone will cost you £5 a year. Unplugging appliances completely could cut your household emissions and bills by around 10%.
Our planet is overrun with plastic bags – millions and millions are discarded every year. Most end up in landfill sites, while the rest create litter on land and sea and are a potential hazard to the animals living there. Pick up an IKEA blue bag instead and the planet will thank you.
When you’re feeling the chill indoors, don’t turn the thermostat up. Turn it down instead by 1°C and put on a jumper. It could save you up to 225kg of CO2. Not to mention the money you’ll be saving on your heating bills.
There are lots of things you can do here. First, check your roof insulation – it can probably be improved. How are your windows? Fitting double glazing can cut your carbon emissions by 680kg.
Give your car a rest and ride to work on a bicycle. Don’t have a bike? Try walking. Both are free, will get you places and double up as exercise. So basically you have no excuse. And if you’re walking, use the stairs instead of the lift.
The more IKEA FAMILY members we get to swipe, the more forests we’ll create. So tell your friends and family!
